Project Final event at IALD - Enlighten Europe 2026 in Paris

Successful conclusion of the ‘SHAPE-THE-LIGHT’ project at IALD – Enlighten Europe 2026 in Paris

Co-funded by the European Commission as part of the ‘Creative Europe’ programme, Shape The Light was a 30-month European educational project. It aimed to bring together the worlds of lighting, the arts and culture. In Belgium, it was coordinated by KU Leuven (together with the cluster Groen Licht Vlaanderen), alongside four other specialist clusters across Europe. The programme involved training courses, practical workshops and networking events designed to foster collaboration between creatives and professionals in the lighting sector.

   

This year, the partners of SHAPE-THE-LIGHT, a European project developed under the European Union’s Creative Europe programme, attended the IALD Enlighten Europe conference, which took place in Paris in june. The event offered a valuable opportunity to gather new inspiration, discuss current topics in the lighting industry, and meet interesting people with their projects, questions and perspectives.

The partners were invited to present the results of the #ShapeTheLight initiative, which was due to come to an end on 7 July 2026. The special round-table discussion on 19 June entitled ‘Shape the Light: art for light, light for art’ brought together the project’s European partners to explain how our four lighting clusters have worked to bridge the worlds of art, design and technology. The session highlighted how the project has promoted co-creation, international collaboration and the exchange of knowledge between various stakeholders in the lighting design value chain, linking art, design, technology, sustainability and innovation.

As the icing on the cake, Sabine De Schutter, lighting designer, Womeninlighting ambassador and founder of Studio De Schutter, gave a talk tittled ‘Let There Be Re-Use — Circular Thinking in Lighting Design’.

AI in lighting: a curse or a blessing?

Open Discussion Forum in the theme ‘Bridging the Digital and Physical World’

Groen Licht Vlaanderen (and KU Leuven) is knowledge partner for the Future Lighting, a yearly organised Belgium-Netherlands (BELNED) event consolidating the lighting sector and their stakeholders.

On the first evening, a Lighting Experts Dinner takes place. This exclusive event is organised by Easyfairs, the organisers of Future Lighting and is in collaboratiion with industry organisations in the foyer of the venue ‘Next Level’. It offers plenty of space for guests wishing to dine and network in an informal atmosphere. A range of inspiring activities are on the programme, such as an open discussion forum. The theme for 2025 was ‘AI in lighting, a curse or a blessing, moderated by a Lighting designer (Ellen Goulmy) and introduced by two experts (Nikos Huut and Henk Dijkstra ). During the diner, discussions were initiated  by the moderator. 

The evening was an inspiring experience, with fascinating panel discussions and interactive conversations about the most relevant developments in the lighting sector. Whilst enjoying a delicious three-course menu, participants were able to  look forward to in-depth insights and valuable dialogue. They made it possible to bring together an extensive network of leading experts and stakeholders, who will share their vision and expertise.

         

Lichtpuntjes 50: Enlightening art with digital light (KU Leuven +Delta Light) - 28/04/2026

Introduction

This webinar was organised in English and is a remaster of the lecture that was organised during the confex Future Lighting 2025. This presentation was the final step in the SHAPE-THE-LIGHT accelerator journey with Performance Labs resulting into innovative museum lighting.

Exhibitions in musea and art galleries have a temporal character. The rendering of paintings and art pieces in general is highly dependent on the lighting conditions. Adapting constantly the lighting conditions in temporal exhibitions demands plenty of resources to satisfy the illumination of diverse form factors, and requires constantly different type of luminaires and/or accessories, which is not sustainable. Based on this motivation, a smart lighting projector has been conceived, whose angular distribution can be adapted to the shape and dimensions of the piece of art using computer vision and an electronically controlled projector with a resolution of 6° in a range between 20° and 65°. The projector exhibits lighting characteristics that are apt for integration into museum lighting such a high CRI (>90), warm-to-neutral CCT and a smooth projection.

The research towards this smart lighting projector was conducted as part of SME funded project with KU Leuven as knowledge partner. 

Paula C. Acuna Roncancio obtained her master degree on Electrical Engineering from the National University of Colombia. In 2011 she joined the Light and Lighting Laboratory – associated to the KU Leuven – as doctoral researcher on physical modelling of phosphors for general lighting. After defending her doctoral thesis, she joined the architectural lighting company Delta Light, where she has worked as optical designer in the R&D division. Next to her contributions in the lighting industry, she has also worked for the energy sector from the University of Applied Sciences HOWEST, on the application of AI methods to the forecasting and optimization of energy systems.

Lichtpuntjes 38: Voorstelling EU project 'Shape the light - art for light, light for art' (KU Leuven) - 29/01/2025

Inleiding

Zaken doen, innovatie en creativiteit zijn met elkaar verbonden. Het EU gesubsidieerd CREA-CULT COOP project SHAPE-THE-LIGHT is gebaseerd op het tweeledige complementaire concept van de intrinsieke relaties tussen kunst en bedrijfsleven, met de nadruk op kunst, design en de verlichtingsindustrie.

Het project lanceert ondersteunende initiatieven en een open en inclusieve samenwerkingsruimte voor het creëren van nieuwe creatieve processen, bedrijfsmodellen en marktontwikkelingen, en om de digitale en ecologische transitie in de architecturale verlichtingsontwerpsector te omarmen. Het belangrijkste objectief is om een brug te slaan tussen de verschillende actoren om co-creatie en co-design processen te genereren, waarbij mogelijkheden worden gecreëerd om geavanceerde technologieën en nieuwe innovatieve oplossingen te testen voor de uitdagingen van deze industrieën.

Spreker is Catherine Lootens die sinds 2004 werkzaam is binnen het Laboratorium voor Lichttechnologie (eerst KAHO Sint-Lieven, nadien FIIW  KU Leuven) als projectmedewerker voor de  tussen 2024 en 2027 goedgekeurde IWT/VLAIO projecten Groen Licht Vlaanderen. Sinds 2017 is ze cluster manager en bestuurder/secretaris van de Groen Licht Vlaanderen vzw.

Project Presentation at Lichtfestival Gent 2024

A first short public presentation of the project SHAPE-THE-LIGHT was hold during Ghent Light Festival 2024 - A DAY event which took place on Friday 2 February (PM) in the 'Blauwe Vogel' room, at the De Krook library in Ghent. Organiser was city of Ghent. This event brought together the Ghent Light festival 2024 light artists and designers, other light festival organisers (ILO members), lighting companies, knowledge institutes and other stakeholders.
